When Do We Start the Conversation?
In this episode of Everyday Equity, Pooja Kothari responds to a question many adults avoid
when should we start talking to children about white supremacy, race, gender, disability, and power?
Her answer is clear, these conversations don’t begin with children,They begin with adults.
The early years aren’t about delivering perfect explanations. They’re about adults building the language, courage, and historical understanding needed to speak honestly when it matters. Waiting until children are older often means we haven’t practiced telling the truth at all.
This episode also challenges how we talk about figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and why celebrating his legacy without naming slavery, Jim Crow, and white supremacy misses the reality of why his work was necessary.
A grounded reminder that awareness starts with us — long before children ask the questions.
